Bars 88 through 93?

Ack!

All that's going through my mind are bars 88-93 of Shoskatovich's Symphony No. 12 coz the percussion section got "targetted" in that part, so we rehearsed through that bit...quite alot!

Well, got the timps though I wanted to play crash, and that's the timp and snare solo part that's rather difficult to follow becuase the meter keeps changings from 4/4 to 3/4 to 3/2 every other bar!

Got shot "in action" by some committee member, hence my ugly mug shot will be displayed during foundation day...ack ack ack!

Carscapes

Had dinner with ABC to celebrate his new acquisition - A BMW E36 325i Coupe! It's a beauty and the bavarian straight six can sure pull! Sporty colour too, was saying that it's still such a thing of classic beauty even though it's a 13 year old car! Man... how I'm hungering to quickly get rid of the Steel Magna and get a E30... don't think I'm going to splurge on an E36 just yet.

So anyways, we went to Jimmy Liks. The last time I was there was just over a year ago with JH when ACJC came over to visit though that can't be compared to ABC whom hadn't been since 4 years ago! Apparently, the decor hasn't changed since then, but that's what I love about it! The long tables and dim lights with the brightly coloured tapestry obfuscating your view of your neighbours. It's surprising and a pity that the noise level that evening was so loud. Had to raise our voices to be heard or well, do the cosy thing and lean over? =P It wasn't as crowded as when JH and I went which would explain why we were able toget seats without making a booking as usual but doesn't explain the unfortunate marring din hanging in the air, especially considering the textured walls which really should have diffused most of the sound?

Couldn't really decide so we ended up going for their disgustation menu, which we both concluded not only costs a fraction of Tetsuya's but was just as wonderful! (Well, okay I've never been to Tetsuya's so, will just have to trust that it is...)

Every flavour was different, reminded me a little of Club Chinois from back home but I think they try too hard whereas Jimmy Liks tends to work with the basics flavours as opposed to concocting new fangled fused food. Jimmy Liks just blends in the asian accents with your staple meats wonderfully together!

Take for example the seafood salad which was basically crab meat and your salad mix, what was exciting though was that they used a dressing that had your usual base of mayo with that extra dash of thai curry that just jooozes the whole thing up! Just so refreshingly light but tangy!

Ok, so I know they made the oysters crunchy by sprinkling it with deep fried onions but that doesn't explain the wonderful sauce that gives the raw "Taste of the Sea" that extra push into becoming a real spot-in-the-arm aphrodisiac jolt!

Must say the dumplings were surprisingly authentic to the extent of what you would find from a fine dining restaurant back in Singapore. Most disappointing was the Gai Lan (which the waiter pronounced Guy Land, which left me confused a bit till I realised...), was just very lightly blanched vegetables a tiny dabble of light soya sauce?! I guess as the last dish, it can be considered an anticlimax course to bring you back to reality?

Well reality was that the bill came up to $151 but then it's $50/pp for the degustation and then there was also the wine and dessert of Coconut ice-cream and Banana fritters which reminded me soooo much of Goreng Pisang back at home! Ahhhh.... money well spent!

I guess the waitress (whom I thought looked like Nicole Richie whilst ABC reckoned more of a young Cameron Diaz) summed it up best when she said that it's hard to answer whenever anybody asks for a recommendation because everything on the menu is so good!

I think the list of car that ABC has owned just puts anybody to shame! It's such a pity that Singapore puts such totalitarian spatial restrictions on vehicular ownership which does make everything uber-ly cool, new and fashionably up-to-date but where have all the history gone?

White Trash

Yeps, that's what a certain old cherished housemate would have called them - White Trash and I'm almost going to call Blogger that too because it always seems to default to the "Chinese setting" when I log in... even after I clear the cookies! Me thinks there must be some China bloggers around the uni though I have no idea why they would change the language settings, I mean they should be used to reading menus and stuff in English anyways!!! Sometimes I think it's a good idea that China has cernsored bloggers... I wouldn't be able (nor would I want to) read their musings anyways!

So anyways, back to the topic. So I learnt from the other housemate that the girlfriend is actually on the dole (read: Centrelink). So all this while when she's been living off her boyfriend, not coughing up a single cent and at the same time chastising me for not contributing enough to the household?!!! Blodee hell and back bitch! So YOU expect me to contribute to your luxurious living by subsidising you on nessecities such as toilet rolls and comdiments?!

Yeah woman, I've caught onto your lies you freaking serpant! Not going to believe you anymore!!!

Well, we're reamaining codial though with the smiles, hellos and mates... but hey, I'm Singaporean, if anybody's going to put on a false front and backstab and bitch behind your back, it's going to be me, girl.

In other news, I was at my usual Borders Bondi Junction hunt and this woman had asked me to look after her Blackberry as it was charging. (I usually plonk myself next to the powerpoint so I can hook up my laptop too). So anyways, when she came back to collect it and I was breathing a sigh of relief that it didn't go off as the cynnical me was eyeing it as if it were a terrorist bomb and you never know although she was caucasian. Eck, I digress again. So I was chatting her up abit asking her whether she's charged it enough and she in turn was thanking me for lavishing my attention into looking after it for her. Oh, and she's easy on the eyes too, she's actually really pretty!

So yada yada yada, blah blah blah and she said she was in digital media business and I told her that it was a co-incidence that I'm doing my thesis on usability. We chatted about future plans and all that and then asked for my contact! Whooohoo! What a surprise, I've been ...erm... head-hunted!

Gotta just finish up the thesis now..... I know, I know... gambate!

Post Its!

Today has been a wonderful day, think my life in Sydney's actually picking up!

Well, kinda started off later yesterday afternoon. Collected the damn Magna after getting lost in Eskinville/St. Peters, walking up to Alexandria when I was actually supposed to be in Roseberry! So I took a bus into town eventually, since the plan was to walk till I either found the workshop or an ATM but neither of those stituations took place! Withdrew money then decided I have had enough and hopped on a cab to the mechanics. Car turned out to be fixed up better than expected, I mean te bonnet needs to be repainted and I was joking that if they popped a grey/black one that I'd pretend that it was a carbon fibre one =P But it turned out to be... a very dirty light bluish grey, blends under the right kind of light though?

Drove the beast back home then headed to uni and spent the rest of the day at the library and the lab plonking away on development. Fixed a damn bug that turned out to be a problem with the toolkit!!! Ack, lousy documentation... *grumbles* wasted time *grumbles* will document it! But still after that hurdle I got a few features implemented so all-in-all, was a good run at the labs!

Had nice chats to people from back home too, awwww... I seem to be sorely missed! Well either that or it's some horrible conspiracy to get me back to the motherland =P Bleah, aint I cynnical eh! Anyways, nice to hear from all the guys again, really do miss all of them, so very much!

So yes, about today...went out for lunch at XVII over at darling habour, nice Union Square Sandwich, good company! Really brightened up my day having good conversation over fine food and *koff* having the bill picked up for me!

Trotted back to the labs and sorted out some small admin stuff with getting the Magna insured, was relatively painless process amazingly and erm... not really that expensive as I thought. Sorted out some other e-mails then I got a call inviting me to a concert at night! Well, decided to jump on the chance since I've never heard the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. Must see what the whole hype of people playing on antiquated instruments, oops.. I mean period instruments!

So here I am, at the ABO "French Passion and Italian Masters" concert. So yeah, my impressions of Brandenburg stuff was really boring monotonous dymanics and form, was so afraid I was going to fall asleep or something. Was really expecting boring ho-hum stuff. Boy was I wrong, I was blown away! Extremely great music and experience! So glad I came, today's really gotta be a day for the books!!! This is the life I wish I had, the opportunities to experience all these little things that you won't be able to find back home, the discovery of a fresh sensation! Marvously impressed by the countertenor Phillipe Jaroussky or better known as France's Opera Singer of the Year 2007! Though when he first made an appearance I thought I had walked into "Mr Bean goes to the Opera" and I had to bite my lip to prevent myself from laffing! Yay, another priceless performance for, erm... free! Can't believe I've been given the honour and privilege to be at this premeire, egads, so loving my life right now!

So yeah, first ABO concert, first live performance using period instrument and the first time meeting a fragile lady sitting beside me that got so overly excited over opera she was cheering and whistling like a teenager at the end of the concert, how sureally frightful!!! Well, that's till she asked me if I played an instrument and upon learning that I was a percussionist then proceeded to inquire if I've ever played "those huge korean drums". *rolls eyes* I think it's all the korean food I've been eating...

Sill can't say that I like the sound of the harpsichord but geez the sound of the Lirone is so unique! The sorrowful cry it makes really pulls at the heartstrings somemore! And then there's the theorbo, damn that thing is huuuuge!

Went for supper with ABC after the concert and it seems dinner's complimentary too! Managed to protest my way into buying a Prawn salad to share under the pretense that I was ravishingly hungry... Again, having an amazing day!

Oh and lastly, found a post-it on the windscreen of the car today and then another one stuck on the sliding door to the backyard!

Gotta thank the anonymous person for the warning! Didn't know it's wrong to parallel park on the "wrong side of the road! (It was the small dual carriageway street outside my house) The other one's from the horrid couple that owns the dog... not only is it not allowed into the house now when they're not at home or asleep (like 3/4 of the day?!), but it's now banished to the backyard and what I mean is the paved porch at the back of the house where the dog pees and shits...

Right, it's chewing up stuff and being naughty but it's because it's bored at lonely, doesn't have enough toys and doesn't get walked often enough (Once a week and that's only because I pity the poor thing that I'll walk it myself!!) RSPCA/PETA if you're reading this, save the poor puppy from Mr & Mrs Cruela!!

Semester 2 - Week 1

I'm back... well sorta!
Big news is ... that my freaking idiotic asshole of housemates have cancelled the internet connection because -

"We don't have a laptop anymore, so we're not going to pay for some thing that we don't use"- Couple

So that's fine, I told them not to cancel it right away but at the end of the billing cycle on the 5th of August.

"No, I don't want it under my name anymore. If you want it I'll sign over the contract to you..." - Boyfriend

Erm, but that means that the contract termination liability of $15/mth will be bourne by me and it'll come up to $90 if you terminate right away (and they meant TODAY NIGHT)

"Take it or leave it mate!"

At which point I lost my temper, told him to do whatever he wanted and hung up.

So there you go, I'm doing my thesis and I don't have an internet connection and so here I am at the university library blogging... it's a different experience but it's also the first day of the new semester and university life is thriving!!! I've gotta tell off the newbies that try to cut the line for the computer terminals that there's indeed a queue... stupid undergrads...

Anyways, things haven't really been going very well except for last Sat where I went for the Lalo Shriffin concert... egads! I saw Lalo himself!!! He was literally centermitres away from me!!! His music is ... erm... too advant garde for me though and James Morrison is just simply stupendous...

Right will try to report back again... wherever I get internet!

Hope everybody's fine!

Four to the Floor?

It's 4 degrees now, absolutely freezing yeah? Well take my word for it because this little idiot had to walk home from uni with only jeans, polo-tee, scarf and pullover! Froze my face off I did! But then again... I think it was only my head that got frozen... oh well, give them brain cells a little cyrogenic rest I guess!

So swamped by the thesis... and to top it off, stupid housemate had to tell me they wanted to cancel the internet today! It was one of those moments where if I had a gun, I'd have blown off her head if weren't such a God fearing person. She even admitted that it was unfair to me... Duh, yeah thanks for your honesty but she really didn't get it! I wanted to explain it in nice simple terms - What happens if somebody tells you that from tonnight, you'd banned from smoking? Internet = Cigarette you nitwit!!! I'm a computer science student and you want me to write a thesis without the internet, you must dumber than I thought!

Sigh...okay enough whinging... got some nice bits done tonight, not quite finished yet though. Got quite over-whelmed at some points where there's all these thoughts pouring in all at once and you don't know which to concentrate on... good thoughts though so hopefully I'll remember them tomorrow and write them in. Then again, it all feels as though the whole report is bulging out of proportion with all these points that I think should be made...

Really gotta get out of the house, if not because everytime I see the dog, I feel so damn sad for it! It hasn't been out of the house for nearly a month now I believe and I so want to walk it but I just don't have the time. They say that if you bath it too often you're stripping it of its natural oils and the fur will drop off... but it's been 2 months since I last gave it a bath and I SAW FLEAS! Not to mention his brush has gone missing, so the poor dog's gonna suffer even more now. And for goodness sakes, "I wanted a Beagle" is not an excuse for cruelty!!!

Sigh... I love it sooooo much the poor thing.

Oh well, off to bed... I hope!

[Voice of Eric Cartman] Respect my Authority!

When I was told they were going to axe the campus security force, I was wondering why they would do such a silly thing... till today that is when I got un-ceremoniously booted out of my lab!

Ok, so I did forget to bring my student card but it's not like I was being a nuisance or something! I was sitting there, totally alone in the lab, working on my notebook and surrounded by notes. Wasn't disturbing a single soul...

So even though I showed him my previous student cards with me, he wasn't willing to accept them, even saying that he his ID card was the old one and so he could be pretending to be a security guard. EXACTLY! I was arguing with him that if that's the case then I need not recognize his authority since he was using the old ID cards but he still insisted that I leave the building! What insolence!

Throughout my walk home I was fuming and thinking of all sorts of heinous ways of dealing with him and his stupidity. Complaining to the security department about the extremeties of enforcement, the inflexibility, the idiocracy of insiting I wasn't a student even though I could obviously use the computers. Just wish that our dog was a real police dog so that I could go back and seek it on him, hopefully severing his jugular! Should ask my brother about these kinda things...

Oh well, reason enough now that they should axe the stupid campus security, big bunch of power-tripping asses that they are...

Acidic Rain falls in Sydney

No doubt this is what I signed up for, this is what I wanted, this is why many have gone abroad exactly to experience new things... But it's just that I wish it isn't quist so the shock treatment that I'm experiencing. For this is what I signed up for.

You see it on TV, you read about it in the news, the Beatles have a sung about it, it's part of teenage/pop culture in most parts of the (developed?)world I'd say but nothing really measures up to the actual experience of seeing somebody "trippin". For this is what I signed up for.

In the beginning it's like there was a nitrous oxide leak and all my housemates were affected but me. The constant laughter's actually quite freaky and if only that was all to LSD. I'm gonna attribute it for making my housemate hug, hump, strip and chase me all over the house. Acid makes you hallucinate and perform strange acts... or does it just make you stupid? Not really sure coz she was already a ditz to begin with so her constant blittherings, babbling and boozing is quite normal actually, Acid just exaberates all of it...and then some? For this is what I signed up for.

It was even both alarming and embarassing that her boyfriend's videoed her romp with me on his mobile and trumpeting the triump of this feat after to me...but yeah, he seems to be dealing with Acid much better than her I'd agree. Then again, this is someone who waits on his princess hand and foot whilst being berated constantly for being a worthless fool. Basic chemistry teaches you acid + acid = stronger acid and I do often wonder if my housemates know that...maybe I could teach them? For this is what I signed up for.

Didn't get to finish my viewing of Colour me Kubrick which was so rudely interuppted by the shannadigans of my housemates. It's been a strange night and I say this because I'm the one in this house that's supposedly insane and drugged up! I should stop hoping that my life here down under will improve...then again maybe I just haven't found my groove or place here. For this is what I signed up for.

Strike one off my list of aussie experiences!

The blind following the blind...

Question of the day

- Why is the blind man taking a photo of his guide dog?

Yeah, I'm totally bored and distracted in the labs... hence the tom foolery!

In other news...in the midst of exciting headlines such as Plastic bottle explodes in Clementi Ave. 3 (somebody please tell CNA to move on from the whole "War on Terror" already...), Singapore makes headlines as no. 6 in this guy's Top 18 Skylines in the World

6. Singapore

One of the best (urban) planned and cleanliest metropolitan cities in the world, Singapore looks like an architectural model city come to life. The buildings cannot be higher than 280 metres due to air traffic control restrictions, but that has added a tall (but not too tall) and consistent building height and space pattern that makes this skyline unique: Three buildings are exactly 280 metres tall and 5 others (8 total) stand at just over 200 metres. The buildings are mostly light-coloured and there is a large expanse of greenery dotted around the city core. This South-Eastern city is definitely in a league of its own.
