Free Smells!!
Another revelation was revealed to me today....
It seems that there's been gossip along the grapevines here, of a certain unit in my building. Whenever they pass by the unit, they'd be sure to smell something nice on the stove!
People have been wondering who's the person behind the door.
My neighbour told me today, that her friends have been telling her about this door. When she asked which unit, they said 87. She responded that she knew the person living there, and everybody was surprised and wanted to know the person!
Well, sorry to disappoint everyone, but the person behind door number 87A, is none other than me.
You see, I cook with my door open so that my bed doesn't smell of what I've cooked all the time, and I guess the smells waft out to the main corridor, which everyone uses since it leads to the main door of my building.
Seriously, my cooking's nothing fantastic at all, nothing but vegetables cooked with lotsa garlic and oyster sauce, chicken seasoned with soya sauce, pepper and recently, sesame oil which my my dad gave me before leaving.
Nobody's tried my cooking yet, though I've received many requests from a certain someone to try my chicken tofu =P
Don't think I'll let anybody try my cooking, heh, just gonna let them forever wonder what lies behind the door.
Meanwhile, free smells for all! (ala Famous Amos!)

Good Bye and Thanks for all the Fish
Just came back from the airport....freaking tired! Very happy, though at the same time, sad to see the family leave....sigh, I do love them so....yes even my brother.
My dad and brother managed to pull off something extremely rare, unexpected but very coveted.
It was achieved by teamwork I would say by the whole family, each doing his own part that adds to the delicate balance of conditions that set the wheels into motion. Although totally unplanned, the result of this situation made everybody very very happy, and ended the trip on a very very good note! My brother himself said "Thanks to God!"
Yep, you saw correctly - Business Class!
Dad and Bro got a free upgrade from Economy class!!!
It started with a long queue at Brisbane airport Check-in row 6. Departure was 2000hrs, and we only reached the airport at around 1900hrs. Dad was complaining that if he knew that that the line was going to be that long, he would have set off much much earlier. He was also so damn worried that the changes I made to delay their flight by one day wouldn't be in the system since the ticketing officer didn't give me any confirmation number over the phone. So there we were, at the end of the very long line for Emirates EK431. I believe we were the amongst the last 3 at the end of that queue actually, and I think that helped us get the free upgrade!
When it came to our turn, the queueing system flashed "Next customer please", but just as we were about to make our way to the economy check-in counter, we got cut off by another passenger....apparently he mistook an empty slot and moved away from the queue, only to be left hanging amongst the end of the check-in row, and so went for the next immediate available counter. So we returned back to the end of the queue, where we were prompty beckoned by an attendent.
This attendent, however, was not situated amongst the Economy section, but First Class!!
That was I guess, the first few signs. We didn't think much of it at first and I totally had no idea why my brother was bugging me to take a picture of him, until he started gesturing to the LCD screen above us that said "First class". Oh, do take note that it's a red carpet! Not the dinghy well-trodden green one laid in Economy Class =P
I do admit I did get a little worried when the attendent shouted over to her collegue that the tickets were "gated". Didn't kmow wat that meant, but a gate definately isn't good in my heavily computer inclined vocabulary. There wasn't any response from her collegue and so she had to go over to his counter. My father's paranoia flared up again, and he again pestered me whether I was sure their tickets had been correctly amendment.
It was pretty unnerving when the first words she uttered after returning was "the flight is full" and for that split second I immagined my dad giving me hell for blotching up their return flight big time. Luckily, those words were followed with "but we can offer you a free upgrade to business class. However, the 2 of you would be seated seperately". Think it took awhile for the whole surprise thing to sink in, before my dad could agree to it!
So what's the formula you ask? Well, there isn't any. It's just the unique combination of our family's pachant for rubber time and chance I guess. If it weren't for my dad's last minute packing, bathe and loo-break. If it wasn't for my bro bugging me to install Splinter Cell onto the xBox so that he could play, and then him dragging our departure till 1830+hrs, and if it weren't for my unique driving skills that put us at the airport at that time so that my dad and bro could get into that queue position, I don't think we would have chanced upon this marvelous chance!
Oh well, although I'm not enjoying any of the perks of their upgarde, I'm most happy for them! I can just imagine them now, sipping champagne, playing with the sky bed, becomming part of the mile-high club. Hmm....ok maybe not that last one. Curses though, that my brother would have the chance to ride business before me! I'm the successful prodigal one damnit!! =P
[mushy]
The faimly hasn't had a proper family vacation....since I think my brother was born if you exclude malaysia and I guess this one's been due for a very very long time especially with my brother complaining that he's never been on a plane and how I've been on countless planes already (only 8 so far actually) and I guess more importantly, that my dad's getting old....I'd want him to see more of the world and spend more time with him.
It's been great fun having them around. Although they've been here just 8 days, the time I've spent with them has just re-inforced my love for the both of them, and left me worrying and missing them all over again. Although some parts of the trip were a little rocky with quarrels over speeding, sense of direction, spending, planning, confusion over the plan....etc.
Who would have thought just 8 days could do so much damage to my fragile mind. That just a mere 200 odd hours could have made such an impact on my memories and jarred my comfort levels so much. Though I feel I've been set-back a mile on my independence progress just with their visit, I think it just shows how much love I have for them, and of course, how much I'm gonna miss them already when they've just left a few hours ago only.
This is definately a family trip I'll remember...or at least hope to remember as vividly as possible what with my aging body and dwindling memory capacity.
Sigh, the apartment feels so cold and empty now...
I miss my dad's snoring, my brother hogging the xBox and all of us cuddling 3 abreast on my small double bed....
[/mushy]
PS The only time I had fish for meals was when my bro and father visited, and bro cooked salt-pepper red snapper. Mmmmm.....

Driving Miss Daisy
Dad ran out of dental floss, so we all got into the car for a 3 min run to woolies after dinner.
Specially rented a car from Avis to ferry them around, and so far have been their chauffuer...well except when they go off to town and I drive myself to school to study!
Decided to let daddy have a drive, since he's supposed to drop me off at school for the exam at 8am later. What better chance for him to get used to the car and aussie roads.
I decided to pop on back, since it might be my only chance to, and Bro rode shotgun.
Dad: "We're not moving"
I peered from the back, and everything seemed to be in order - Handbrake down, gear to drive.
Oh seatbelt sign on. "Dad, your seatbelt!"
Wow, what a smart car!
Dad: "It's still not moving"
"Press harder lah"
Dad: "It's all the way down already!"
Hmmm...how puzzling....
"Are you stepping on the brake?"
V6: *Vrrroooooooooom*
Well in his defence, it's a Holden Commodore Series II. A really large car (think BMW 5 series) equipped with a 3.8l V6 engine. Nothing like the sedated 1.6l Megane we have at home. Though they're both continental cars, they have the signal stalk on the right like your japanese cars, and so it's rather amusing to see the wipers sweep when my dad makes a turn.
Been "throwing the car around" as my dad aptly put it, much to his dismay of course judging from the yelps from the back and the yells for me to slow down. Brother's been shotgun all the way though, and like me, he loves the thrill of a good pedel to the metal V6! =P

Home of the Crocodile Hunter
Dad and Bro are here!
We just got back from a visit to The Australian Zoo - Home of the Crocodile Hunter. Who is the Crocodile Hunter? Crikey, it's Steve Irwin of course!
The plane Emirates 'EK430' was due to land at 6:20am, got to the airport on time, though I sped most of the way (Speed Limit on most of the roads were 60km/h only). Was surprised to see 'Delayed' on the arrivals board, although the plane did leave Singapore 40 mins late.
Spent and hour and a half waiting..though after 10 mins, images of confused family members staring at arrival boards full of the word 'Delayed' from 9/11 surfaced and I was worried for awhile...and then thank God, it changed to 'Landed'. It wasn't for a good hour and a half before they emerged from behind the iron curtains, just when I was about to seat down again having grown weary of staring at two small CRTs that allows you to pre-empt the people streaming out although all one can make out is blurry figures pushing trollies....not even to the extent of at least making out whether the figure was asian... Oh well, just happy that they've arrived safe and sound!
The Australia Zoo is Queensland's No.1 Tourist Attraction and this year, won the 'Major Tourist Attraction for Australia. It's a young zoo started by Steve Irwin's parents
and now currently stands on 60 hectares of land with over 750 animals. Comparatively, the Singapore Zoological Gardens sits on 28 hectares of land and is home to more than 3000 animals. Sigh, even the animals in our zoo don't escpae the perils of Singapore's vertical living theme...
We were lucky though, as the new Animal Planet Crocoseum was just completed in April with a new Bird show too. I might be biased though, but other than Steve Irwin performing live, getting to cuddle with the kangaroos and pet the Koalas (or is the other way round?), the Singapore Zoo still had more to offer with its variety of animals and thus, capacity to keep me entertained with more kinds of shows and sights.
Had to leave earlier than planned though, coz my dad was falling asleep in the midst of birds swooping just inches above our head....

I solemnly swear I'm up to no good.
[Spoilor FREE]
We went to see Harry Porter 3: The Prisoner of Azkaban today, and I came out of it having the impression that the movie's matured. To the point that Hermione could get away with showing some flesh...though I wonder if any flesh at all is 'G' rated...
It was still a wonderful movie though, with an even more excellent soundtrack, abit better acting, and of course...more secrets revealed.
I wonder though if it's because we're not used to characters of science-fiction under-18 kindof shows growing up, ala from your Bug Bunny to Simpsons, or your Days of your Lives to This is your Life shows....well in the latter, they never grow up, they seem to change faces...erm...or for that matter a under-18 show.
What did I like about this installment?
Well, that it had a happy ending, better "grown-up" kind scenes starting with the revenge on the rich brat fight to the slautering of a hippogriffs (did Chocobus come first?), affection between 2 main characters, mischeif, revenge, and of cause, Jennifer Saunders playing a small cameo role. Oh yeah, I left out the twist (no not the cone-of-death like tree) at the end didn't I?
Anyway, one of the best effects I feel, is the animated pictures that the newspapers in the show had, oh and the flying scene was pretty nice, story is still quite intrigueing....
So Harry Porter's all grown up now, and is it time for me to own one of J K Rowning's books? Well....if she doesn't churn out anymore, or sell any more film rights, I guess so?
Hmm...even the posters seem to scream "Charmed Junior". Can just imagine the next film, where Harry, Hermione and Ron join hands and chant "The power of 3 will set us free, the power of 3 will set is free...." [cue Charmed intro song "I am the wind, I am the sun..."]
I have though, myself been up to no good....with only 8 more days remaining till my first paper, I really should be studying definitely, but here I am, entertaining requests to go watch movies, for post-FYP celebration lunches and teas and LAN gaming sessions. Are we all so desperate and sad that since we’re all graduating at the end of the semester, it might be the last time we’d be seeing each other, even though we happen to live in an island much smaller than Queensland herself?
Suffice to say, I think I’d better make this the last straw, no more partying, no more watching the back log of movies and animes, no more visits to neighbours and staying till late for nice chats and awesome soups.
Must my social life wind down in order for my academic life to wind up?
How I wish, I could have been enrolled in Hogwart’s School for Wizards and Witches instead, conjuring up spells and incantations, cooking up potions and hexes in a cauldron and the defence against the dark arts aka the fear within oneself.
Could defeating evil be as easy as welling up the happiest brightest moment of your life from within, and proclaiming loudly with a twig in hand, officially, "Expecto Patronum" which I swear sounds more like “Expectorate Petroleum”. I mean geez, where do these apparently creative script writers cook up all these incantations, from “Witchery for dummies”?
But then, that would all involve living a life of fantasy wouldn't it?
Oh yeah, did they steal a scene from Princess Mononoke?
Hmmm….I suppose the band rehersals should stop too I guess, this had gotta be the last I hope =P
Mischief Managed (well, I guess if it's for food, I can make the exception =P)
Over the Air: Schezo, Symphony No.9 (Beethoven)

Gym Phobia
I can, I can, I can!
Just came back from the gym...and the last time I've been to one...was when I was living 2 buildings away last semester....and I think that was in the middle of last semester. If you've been my avid reader and fan though, you know I've been doing crunches and swam quite abit when it was warmer!
Gah, couldn't last the standard 2.4km run....got through 1.7km at 10.5km/h though. Well you work out the math....
My HP980 worked great with the long cord (thanks for the rec tshush!), coz I could set the discman on the floor (it kept skipping when I placed it on the treadmill....yes yes, I'm a wuss for not jogging outdoors and braving the 16 degree night). Only thing is that the velor muffs seem to absorb sweat =(
Why did I suddenly pick up me drawstring gym shorts you ask? Well, it came as a recommendation from a neighbour as a way of relieving stress.
Speaking about another way of relieving stress....watching Big Brother:Uncut now, and they're having a discussion on mastabation. Girls do it too! Hah! Hmmm...or does this perclude Singaporean girls...
Anyway the girls in Big Brother are top notch, anything goes really...well except outright sex. They're gone so far as to perform brazillian waxes on each other....on TV!!! They had a girl covering the private parts or in another "session" some of them erected a privacy curtain using blankets, and one of the girls, snipping away at the girl's nether regions, sound effects included.
Big Brother is educational too, coz I learnt what the words "merkin" and "pash" (seems to be an aussie term?) means.
What does merkin mean?
Did that help? Hmmm.... still wondering?
Anyways, the characters that are getting very boring, since Australia seems to be voting all the nice people out....the first one talked alot, the second one was the only exception coz he was an ass, the third one had the biggest boobies, and the fourth and recent one was actually my favourite....
Do they get that when they SMS a vote, it's not to KEEP the people they're voting for...it's to EVICT the person they're voting for...
Learning lots on how to get people drunk, and what games to organize so that we all make a fool of myself. Geez, the ideas are just piling up for the year-end parties!!! Muahahahha... you guys are gonna suffer, dudes! (especially since I seem to be able to down a vessel of bear now!)
Ok ok, so merkin really means this.....but you've gotta love Google when it throws these curve balls! Oh if anybody actually came across that word before me, drop me a comment yeah?
Wonder if I'll ever get discilplined enuff to get over gyn "phobia"....gah..just need motivation
PS. Me neighbour brought me soup again!!
Over the Air: They're talking about swingers now (No my beautifil, not our kind of Swing swing...)

In a sci fi story by John Varley called something like "The Barbie Murders," a group of women gives up individuality (and sex) and undergoes surgery to become perfect nonsexual beings resembling Barbie dolls. This involves losing genitals, pubic hair, etc. One Barbie goes back to being a woman for a night, painting on nipples and using a merkin.

The Life of a Borg
Dinner was rather enjoyable apart from me choking whilst frying the chicken.
Decided to experiment abit, and marinated the chicken strips in chilli and soya sauce (it came with my fried rice in those small disposable plastc cups) and a dash of black pepper.
Left it to marinate for abit, and then fried it with garlic.
The chilli didn't seem to have been absorbed by the chicken, instead, it seemed to have warfted all over the room, and up my nose, I started to tear and choke and all that....had to turn on the fan.
My Bak Choy (Xiao(2) Bai(3) Chai(4)) with mushrooms simmered with oyster sauce turned out great as usual =P
Well, it was to say the least, an interesting experiment.....
Yesterday was a friend's birthday, and so we all went to a Chinese buffet restaurant that I had spotted after taking the wrong bus, and ending up in some small suburbian town.
$15 for all-you-can-eat Chinese....which just consisted of your usual Honey Chicken, Lemon Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Chicken in rice wine, Singaporean Noodles, Fried Rice and your usual suspects of Fried Dim Sum, Prawn Crackers, Fish and Chips.
The waitress ended up coming over and asking "Are you guys from Singapore? I can recognize the accent". Ahuh...yeps, seems she migrated here and has been living here for 16 years. She gave us complimentary drinks too, although I was too full after loading up on the Chinese Tea. It was such a treat to meet a fellow country(wo)man on foreign land. Did the usual musings about Singapore, and how much it's change since she was last there...blah blah blah. Didn't wanna go down that road though, coz I'd probably have ended up bashing Singapore, although I already came close by mentioning with distress "I've still got to serve army...."
An old neighbour from last sem was also there, and we remarked how much we miss calling each other to talk the night away (it's free calls within the PABXed up apartments). So we used the opportunity to catch up quite abit. Sigh, come to think of it, it's not that we still can't call each other, just that we're so stingy, a call to each other is onli $0.21 unlimited....
It made me realise why I'm so depressed this semester...I don't have a woman to talk over the phone to! The next nearest is Liza, whom I call only once a month. I need a woman to talk to! Sigh....what is it with me and woman....once they get attached, they never call anymore =( Even old joshy doesn't cheer me up anymore!!
A borg is a self-sufficient unit with these sorta telepathic connections to the hive. You're bombarded with their thoughts 24-7, and vice-versa, your thoughts are also broadcasted to the entire community. I want to be a borg...at least I'll be detached from emotions I think....and probably not be as sexually fustrated....
Oh well, back to the assignment...

Furchttbar!
foobar
Another common metasyntactic variable; see foo.
Hackers do *not* generally use this to mean FUBAR in either
the slang or jargon sense.
According to a german correspondent, the term was coined
during WW2 by allied troops who could not pronounce the german
word "furchtbar" (horrible, terrible, awful).
Just got my computer up to 70% functionality, well, actually almost all the entertainment stuff has been installed (i.e firefox, foobar2000, ICQ, WMP10, codecs and of course, Eudora), leaving the productivity suites which I'm hasitant to install just yet, coz Office 2003 is the latest, but I only have Office XP CDs with me at the moment. (Please dun lecture me about $299 Student editions of MS Office...I know they exist)
Probably have to borrow, beg or steal somehow I guess, since I have an essay due Monday.....*groan*
Anyways, if you haven't guessed, the reason why the dictionary.com entry for "foobar" has been quoted, is just because google returned it when I was googling for foobar2000.
Pretty interesting to know that how the word "fubar" came around, and I remember first hearing it in JC, when somebldy mentioned (think it was Aaron?) that it meant "f**ked up beyong recognition" and then also later in SPR (which incidentally, I must mention that if you do a search in IMDB.com, you get a load of funny results!). Hmmm....or maybe it was mentioned because we saw SPR? Hmmmz....
13 days to my first and second last paper, 14 days more till I've gotta goto the airport to pick up my dad and bro and 18 more days till we all catch The Lion King in Sydney!
Good to have plans I must say, though I seem to be terribly busy this holidays, coz I'll be going travelling with some fellow Singaporeans around Australia with a skiing stop in Snowy Mountains!
Most exciting I must say, but then it just means that I've really really gotta study lots so that I can go holidaying in peace.
What am I doing then, back to work! Geeez, somebody turn up the air-con please!!

The Wheels are Turning
Exams are in 3 weeks time and I'm proud to announce that my revisions have started a unprecedented yesterday.
Can't believe I've started revisions so early, especially when I've still got one more assignment due Monday. I guess I'm kinda relaxed about it, since it's an essay, and I know the subject's all about fluffing, since the textbook itself (which was published by the lecturer himself) is just so thick with the bullshit of categorising, how to use a search engines, and why the internet is getting dense (can anyone say DUH?!).
I should be more worried though, just because it's an essay instead of the usual programming assignments. I mean with programming assignments, I can probably finish them within a day or two (provided they're not in C!!!, erm...although the last C one, I did finish in a day), but with essays, I probably do need to read the damn text, highlight at least 20 key terms to use as required, and try to fit them into the assignment.
The assignment's themed around use of critical concepts (hence the 20 key terms), and you've either got to come up with a categorisation system or comment on one. Haven't decided what to do yet, though a friend did suggest that I categorise musical instruments after she was bewildered that there was so many different kinds when she attended my band concert. But ....well not a good idea. Hmm...but looking how the lecturer seems to be obsessed with african drumming....oh should've invited him to the concert since we had a percussion ensemble that featured african drumming. Oh well, anyways...gotta go bang around the noggin a bit.
Study study study, can't believe there's so much to read, and I'm already starting earlier than I did last semester...erm.. and I'm doing less than I did last semester. I guess it could be that my dad and bro are coming to visit in between my 2 papers, so I really gotta settle my last paper before they arrive I guess...and the last paper happens to be my pet paper too! So ...really gotta do well on that one! So yes...gotta study, got to catch them all!
Just reformated my computer, after a virus and some quick fix/stop-gap measure seemed to have screwed up my whole windows, so here I am in the labs, downloading some patches, while the lappy is in the next door lab, grabbing files from the internet too. Risky...but oh well, there are cameras all over the labs anyway, just gotta pray that...no theft occurs.
Argh, damn the internet connection of our school...so God damn slow!!!!!!
Not only is it slow, they're soooo stingy about people downloading stuff "international traffic costs the school MONEY", that they didn't even allow me to download ICQ from a local mirror in Australia. BAH....I'm an internatioonal student gawdamnit!!!
Oh well, back to staring at the download counter...hmm...oh yeah, will get some studying done in the meantime I guess!
